Oil Pipelines Facing Natives with Possible Harm

TransCanada is creating an oil pipeline stretching 1,700 miles long. This pipe will carry 700,000 barrels of oil a day and would reduce U.S dependence on Middle Eastern oil. Native tribes are beginning to protest because the pipe route crosses the Oglala water supply system where they get their water from and could end up polluting it leaving the Natives with no water and possible health concerns. The natives accused them of eminent domain (using private property for public use), but they said it is too late in the procedure to move the route but they will be very careful and the likelihood of their being a spill is very low.

Based on the Natives point of view vs. TransCanada's point of view, do you think the pipeline should be further constructed? Yes/No, why?

  1. I think the pipeline should not be created because it runs right through Native American Reservations without their consent. Since the pipeline is close to a water supply a potential spill could ruin the limited fresh water they have.

  2. I do not think it is right building the pipe over the tribes biggest water supply with out getting their consent.

  3. I feel like this shouldnt be done, because we already take advantage of them, we shouldnt put our oil lines threw their land. Exspecially w/o their concent.

  4. I think that this is actually a good idea it will help the economy by depending less on middle eastern oil. I also think that if it helps our economy it will end up helping the native american tribes too.

  5. Is there really no way to go around them? If not I think they should just go with it anyway. If there is not many chances of a spill I don't see a problem. In the end the economy will get better and there would be a chance for the people living there get more money.

  6. i think that the pipe line is a good and bad idea. It can help us out and there is only a very small chance of a spill. but it also is putting other peoples lives in danger if it happens to spill. if it did spill it could make people very sick.

  7. I think it is a horrible idea what they are doing with the pipe line because more native Americans will die from the heath issues the pipe line is doing and with lack of water.

  8. I don't think it is fair to the native americans because they dont have much water to begin with and if the oil were to spill the water wouldnt be good for them anymore. They should be concerned for their health there are lots of oil spills.

  10. I think the pipeline should not be further constructed unless the owner of the pipeline gives the indians affected by the chance of water polution free drinking water and pays the indian reservation for building on their land without permission.

  11. I think, this ia huge project, almost unnessary, i think oil should be bought normally from it's orginal place. This is not good for indian's because, we are all immgrant's and they get a fair say on if they want that going through that location spot.

  12. i think its a bad idea.. its the native americans land and transcanada shouldnt be able to just take over and do that because if could cause health risks to the people that live there. if they were trying to route oil through hudson and could possibly make a lot of people sick im positive everyone here wouldnt want that to happen. it benefits us but we can still get our oil in the middle east its not like we cant get it anywhere else if this new route doesnt get put up. i think most people are just selfish and dont really think how it affects others.

  13. i think it should not continue because whether the risk is low or not there is still a risk. they are possibly risking the lives of the people on the reservation and i do not think that native americans can afford to take a hit to their people like that.
