In the past we know racism was between the North and the South, The white people always seemed to have the power over the Blacks. Byron is 19, a freshman at S.C College, he is a proud southerner. He was asked to take down a Confederate Flag that he had put up in his dorm room because it had got a lot of complaints. He said " I know its weird because Im black but in this flag, I see pride, respect not racism. Its ignorance that gave the flag the bad name like the KKK. He ended up having to take the flag down. His roomate claimed he was one of the nicest people he knew. No matter what you say or do there is going to be someone who will feel offended. Byron felt violated to the racist code. To prove a point he asked if he could put up an American Flag and they said he could so he said "their could be Native Americans who would get offended because of the American Flag so what would the difference be?" Is it fair that he could not hang up an confederate flag IN his dorm room but could hang up an American Flag?

No, i don't think it's fair because, if the confederate flag he is hanging isn't on purpose of being racist, then all means put it up, but people need to understand that the american flag is some what racist to native Americans who probably would complain about that, but then again, Americans have the higher hand and natives are neglected a lot still. So it really doesn't matter if a flag he puts up isn't for a bad cause, he states that he only put it up because it give's a sense of pride some what motivation. not to be racist?
ReplyDeleteNo it's not fair to allow the american flag but not the confederate flag. The confederate flag can be interpreted as a racist flag although, in many cases it's shown to represent the south. Like Byron many others hang the confederate flag to show their pride for the south such as the Dukes of Hazard. It's ridiculous and ignorant for the college to make him take the flag down because they only see it as racist.
ReplyDeleteno i do not belive it is fair that he can not hang up the flag. if people can hang up the american flag he should be able to hang up the confederate flag. if he was being racist when he was hanging it up then i can see t
ReplyDeletepeople not wanting him to hang it up. since he is not being racist then i think he should be allowed to hang up that flag.
I believe he should be able to put up anything he wants in his dorm room where no body will even see it. He should be able to express his pride anyway he wants.
ReplyDeleteI think that it is very wrong for the college to disallow him from hanging the confederate flag in his own dorm room. It is what he takes pride in from where he comes from and, by not allowing him to hang it is like saying where he comes from is bad. It would be the same as not allowing an immigrant to hang their flag because they take pride in where they come from. The school was wrong to tell the student to take his flag down.
ReplyDeleteNo I don't think it's fair that he cannot have any flag he wants because he is just putting the flag up to show his pride for his nation. No matter where you are from if you want to show pride in your nation it shouldn't matter which flag you're showing as long as you believe in it.
ReplyDeleteI don't think it is fair that Byron could hang up the American flag and not the Confederate flag. Everyone has different views and different believes on everything and his college should respect that. No matter what you say or do in life someone is going to be offended and that just needs to be accepted.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to say I agree with everyone, It's not fair. It's his dorm room. It's just a flag, I don't understand why people have to take everything very seriously. He was just expressing himself, and apparently S.C College is allowed to tell people they can't be themselves, and that it's okay to offend Native Americans.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Karleen, because it really just doesnt make much sense why he cant have any flag he wants in his dorm. People can decorate their dorm with anything they want as long as its american. Thats just not what this country is about welcoming everyone from different parts of the world, and this is taking a huge step backwards in our countries development.
ReplyDeleteI believe if there was any complaint then yes there was action that should have been taken, but there was no complaints they just found the flag in the dorm. There should have not been a big deal out of it because noone was hurt or anything from a flag being there
ReplyDeleteI also agree wiht Bryan and Karleen, if you want to put up a cofederate frag in your dorm go for it. You will probably be looked at in a whole diffrent way but its your dorn you should be able to put up what ever you want.
ReplyDeletei agree i think that he should be allowed to hang up the flag because its not discriminating against anyone and it doesn't go against anything so he has a right to be able to have possession of that flag if he wants too.
ReplyDeleteno its not fair at all because its his opinion and what he thinks is right. He is not using it as a raciest thing or any thing to do with that. its just not right at all that they made him take it down when its in his own room where no one can see it.
ReplyDeleteIt is unfair. It isn't out in public its in his dorm. He should be allowed to hang things that he desires on his wall. No matter what there is always going to be someone who doesn't agree.

ReplyDeleteI believe that he should be allowed to hang any flag he desires in his own dorm. People have the right to the pursuit of happiness and if hanging up the confederate flag is what makes him happy, then he should be able to do so without being criticized for it and shouldn't have to take it down because others do not like it.
ReplyDeleteNo I don't think it is fair because he should have to right to show what he beilieves in and shouldn't take it down just because people do not like it. If that flag makes him happy he should keep it up.
