NAACP Warns Black and Hispanic Americans could lose the right to vote
In the article I read from The Guardian, it basically said that the government was thinking about taking away voting rights for the minority groups in America. Mostly blacks and hispanics .One of the ways they were thinking of taking away those rights is by making everyone bring a photo ID to the voting booth. That would hurt a lot of people because as of right now it costs zero amount of money to vote, so that means anyone who has a social security number can come and vote. If the government makes it so a person has to bring a photo ID than many people who can not afford to buy the nessesities of life will not be able to vote. This is a problem because this will also hurt many white people who are poor, so our own government will be taking away voting rights for more people than they would hope, but it will eliminate the ones they were aiming for to begin with. The article also stated that the states of Florida, Iowa, Kentucky, and Virginia are not allowing anyone to vote if they have convicted a criminal offense. In Florida even when someone has finished their time in jail they have to wait an additional five years before they can register to be a valid voter again. This is keeping many minoritys the right to vote because many of the felonys that are commited in Florida are by black Americans. So they are forcing black americans to wait a minimal of five years to vote which will make them miss on vote because a president can only stand on office for four years. So after understanding this topic do you agree with the government taking away voting rights for minority groups? What is another way that the government could limit the number of voters per election?

I personally dont think that they actually are taking away minority groups rights because there are many minorities groups that can get a form of identification. This law would really only apply to the people who cant afford to get a photo id. Yes i do think this will limit the number of votes per election because not as many people can afford to get a id which will limit the number of votes.
ReplyDeleteI think this will influence the ammount of minority voters in the next election if this passes in most states because minirity groups are thd least likely to have photo identification and it could hurt whites also but people wont care about that they will care that less minoritys are voting
ReplyDeletei do think that it is right. If you are not registered to vote then i don't think you should be able to. i think that there will be less minority groups at the election if this law passes. This could also hurt white poor people that do not have enough money to get a photo ID. I think that it will limit the amount of voters per election.
ReplyDeleteI feel people should have a way to prove who they are. If that means this is what we have to do i guess its nessesary. We have people who arnt voting and people are voting under their names. We even have it so people who are dead get votes because people just say their name to get their ballot. We need to do something to stop this type of thing from happening. Even if its not this.
ReplyDeleteI think that it is messed up that they are trying to take the voting rights away from minorities. Yeah it may look like a lot of the minorities voted for the first time because of Obama but so what? It makes sense that the minorities wanted to wait for someone they thought would be a suitable president. I don't think it is necessary to limit the amount of voters ever American citizen has the right to vote whether or not they're a minority or if they can't afford to buy a photo ID no matter what everyone should be equal isnt that apart of our amendment rights.
ReplyDeleteI dont see this as taking away minority groups voting rights just because they are asking voters to bring a photo i.d. to vote. They are taking away voting rights from the white americans that can not afford an i.d., there just might be a higher number of minorities that dont have the opportunity of having an i.d.
ReplyDeleteNo I do not think that it is right for the government to take away the voting rights of minority groups because if your hear and an american citizen then you should be able to vote and showing your ID make no sense because it just means people who can't get a license can't vote
ReplyDeleteI believe that this is taking away the voting rights to all poor people not just poor minorities.
ReplyDeletei think asking people to bring I.D to vote is taking voting rights away from white people that cant afford to get an I.D.
ReplyDeleteI do not agree with that decision because instead the country progressing they are regressing. Because they would be come back to the old time when people was fighting for rights years ago. and They could ask for a proof that the people are citizens. Not a license o documentation that you have to pay for but documentation such as social security.
ReplyDeleteI agree with jeremy and i think that if you cant get a photo is that is your problem and maybe you shouldnt be voting. They give out photo ids at our highschool and you can get them from other places too that are part of daily routines even at gyms they give you photo id. If you want to vote you should be able to provide a photo id .
ReplyDeleteI think this is a brilliant plan for the republicans to limit the democratic vote. I think everyone in this country has a right to vote unless you live here illegally. I also believe that a photo identification shouldn't be too hard to get even though it costs money. I you really want to vote but do not have a photo I.D. then all it takes is $30. (according to Ms. Vivirito) I think most people can come up with that amount.
ReplyDeleteI think this is wrong. I believe every one has the right to vote if they are citizens of the U.S. It doesn't matter if your poor, black, white etc. Every citizen should have an equal opportunity to vote for who they believe will be a good leader for our country.
ReplyDeleteI don't believe they are necessarily trying to take away the minority vote. They are making it harder and more of a challenge for minorities to vote however, as a U.S. citizen they should have some type of formal documentation to legitimize their right to vote. On the other hand, the NAACP is making it hard on many Americans who can't afford a photo ID, not just minorities.

ReplyDeleteI don't think it is a good idea to take away voting rights for minority people because they should have no reason to not if they wanted to vote. A different approach that the government should do instead of taking away voting rights is first comes first served.
ReplyDeleteThis is the worse idea the government could come up with, the government wants as many people to be voting as possible, by doing this, they are restricting voters from voting. And this could be rather racial towards minority groups because thoughs groups are the groups that can't afford much. And also white poor american who can't afford utility's are going to be stricken from voting basically.
